onions and onions
This is the southernmost point of Awaji Island, where the Naruto Straits and Onaruto Bridge are right in front of you.

Visitors are greeted by the "O-tama Chair," a giant objet d'art in the shape of an onion, a specialty of Awaji Island. The chair is 1.8 m tall and 1.5 m in diameter, and was painstakingly created to reproduce the texture of an onion, taking approximately two months to complete. It is recommended to sit on the chair and take a photo with the Onaruto Bridge in the background.
The specialty is the "Awajishima Onion Beef Burger" (770 yen including tax), a local burger. About 10 types of burgers, including seasonal limited editions, can be enjoyed.
It is the most popular item at the Awaji Island Onion Kitchen inside the roadside station, selling 150,000 units a year, and in 2013 it won first place at an event to determine the best local burger in Japan.
The star of the burger is a nearly 1 cm thick onion cutlet harvested on the island. It is generously topped with Awaji beef cooked in a sweet and spicy sauce and tomatoes grown on the island. Bite into the burger and your mouth will be filled with the bounty of the island, which since ancient times has been called "Goshoku Kuni," meaning "Land of Food," for the abundant foodstuffs it has provided to the Imperial Court.
Megumi Ohama, assistant manager, says, "The secret ingredient is spicy mayonnaise. I hope you enjoy the contrast between the crispy onion cutlets and the rich tomato sauce," she says.
The "Awajishima Onion Gratin Burger" with onion gratin sauce made with local "Awajishima Milk" is also excellent, and the "Awajishima Onion Soft" (330 yen including tax), an odd kind of soft serve ice cream that is like eating cold onion soup, will delight tourists with its playful spirit.
The shop offers more than 100 kinds of original products developed by the young staff members who shared their ideas with each other. Store Uzunokuni offers "The Milk Show," a cookie filled with Awaji Island milk, cheese, and crunchy flakes, as well as "Awaji Island Onion Marugoto Curry," which contains an onion and sells one after another.
Yuji Miyaji, 37, station manager, says, "It is important what we show and what we appeal to tourists. We want to focus on things that can only be found here.
